Graphics & Performance

How to set up Mebula for your device: the basic preset on first start, the most important graphics options and tips against lag.

Mebula runs directly in the browser or in the Steam client. How smoothly the game runs depends on your device and your browser – an up-to-date browser often makes a big difference. You find all graphics options under Settings → System / Graphics. The [?] next to an option gives a short explanation.

On first start

When you enter the world for the first time, you choose a basic preset: low for weaker computers (1–2 GB of RAM, 1–2 CPU cores, no hardware acceleration), middle (2–4 GB, at least 2 cores) or high (4 GB or more, at least 4 cores). Middle and high need hardware acceleration. In the same window you set the background music. You can change everything later.

The most important options

  • Game FPS rate: how often the picture is redrawn per second – from low (15 FPS) to ultra (60 FPS) or maximum. Higher is smoother but needs more power. Running and cloud animations have their own rates.
  • View range: how far you can see around your character. At small screen resolutions, high values cannot be displayed.
  • Game zoom: no zoom, automatic or screen-filling.
  • Mini map: hidden, heuristic with few details, or detailed.
  • Shadows, world effects, world animations: object shadows, night and cave effects, and moving water, fire and fountains. Nice to look at, but the biggest brakes on weak devices.
  • Player animations from simple to very complex, following and animated camera, and animated clouds that leave a trail behind them.
  • Mobile mode (beta): loads smaller graphics and animations and simplifies the display – meant for weak devices. It overrides some other settings.

If the game lags

  1. Turn off shadows, world effects and world animations.
  2. Lower the game FPS rate and the view range.
  3. Set player animations to “simple / few” and the mini map to “heuristic” or “hide”.
  4. Under Settings → Game, show other players only “simplified” or show only your friends. This helps especially in crowded places.
  5. If none of this helps, try the mobile mode.
